I have been receiving multiple queries regarding some missing Internet Explorer Group policy settings.
Most notable is the “Launching Applications and Unsafe Files” setting for which there is no corresponding group policy object.
Hence administrators have a hard time managing this setting for the users across the enterprise.

This problem occurs because these policy settings are not defined in the file that stores the Internet Explorer Admin policy settings namely Inetres.adm

Of course, you can use the Internet Explorer Maintenance policies, but then you cannot manage just the one setting alone with maintenance policies; you will have to deploy the entire set of IE policies.

So every time I got this issue, I had to go back, find out the corresponding registry settings and convince them to use a script to modify or edit the setting through the registry.

Such a change needs to be deployed to the users by the use of a login/startup script.

Now, the registry key that controls this Internet Explorer security zone setting is stored under the following registry subkeys:
User Policy – HKCUSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternet SettingsZones
Computer Policy – HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternet SettingsZones

By default, security zones settings are stored in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry subtree. Because this subtree is dynamically loaded for each user, the settings for one user do not affect the settings for another.

If computer policy is configured, only local computer settings are used and all users have the same security settings. In that case the settings are retrieved from:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternet SettingsZones

The Zones key contains keys that represent each security zone that is defined for the computer. By default, the following five zones are defined (numbered zero through four):
